Why tailored

Why tradies need a tailored approach.

Trade bodies carry a particular kind of load: repeated lifting, sustained awkward postures, overhead and kneeling work, grip and tool use day after day. The wear is rarely from one big incident; it's the cumulative load of years on the tools that builds up tension patterns in the back, shoulders, knees, and forearms. Generic massage usually misses what's actually loaded for a tradie because it doesn't account for the trade-specific position the body lives in for forty-plus hours a week.

The Sunshine Coast has a serious trade workforce: builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, concreters, roofers, landscapers, painters, tilers. The patterns shift between trades (a roofer's shoulders differ from a plumber's knees), but the principle holds: massage for construction workers, massage for labourers, and other trades that recognises the actual load pattern lands more usefully than a generic session.

Common patterns

Common tradie body issues.

The wear pattern is predictable across trades. Four clusters that cover most of what active tradies bring through the door.

Lower back and hips

Lifting load, bending, twisting under weight. The single most common pattern across trades. Lumbar erectors, quadratus lumborum, hip flexors carry the cumulative strain of years of loading and unloading.

Shoulders and upper back

Overhead work, carrying, awkward arm positions. Roofers, electricians, painters, sparkies, plasterers. Rotator cuff, upper traps, levator scapulae, pec minor carry the load and rarely get a chance to fully unload.

Knees and lower legs

Kneeling, squatting, climbing, standing on hard floors. Plumbers, tilers, carpet layers, concreters. Quads, ITB, calves, and the soft tissue around the knee carry significant repeated load.

Forearms, wrists, and grip

Tool use, gripping, fine motor work all day. Carpenters, mechanics, sparkies, painters. Forearm flexors and extensors carry chronic load; tennis elbow and golfer's elbow patterns are common consequences of tool work.

Approach

How I tailor the session.

A first remedial massage tradies session starts with the trade: which one, how many years, what's the worst day-to-day load, where do you feel it. From there, the hands-on work targets the specific load pattern. A 60-minute session for a plumber concentrates on knees, hips, lumbar; a 75-minute session for a roofer focuses on shoulders, upper back, neck. The trade shapes the session, not the other way round.

I'm Lorena, with Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015), ANTA registration, and Mette's Institute Kahuna L1-3 training. For tradies the combination matters: targeted remedial work for the specific tension patterns, and flowing Kahuna bodywork for restoration sessions where the whole body needs settling. Most tradies do well with remedial as the regular work and Kahuna periodically when a deeper reset is needed.

Frequency

When to book.

Three rhythms that suit trade work. Choose the one that matches what your body and your work calendar look like right now.

Heavy phase

Active maintenance

Weekly to fortnightly

For peak work seasons, big jobs, or when the body is already in a flare. Holds the line through the heaviest periods; prevents small niggles becoming big ones.

Ongoing

Steady maintenance

Monthly

The standard rhythm for tradies in regular ongoing work. Enough to address cumulative load before it builds into something bigger. The most common booking pattern for tradies long-term.

Recovery

After injury

Weekly for 3 to 6 weeks

For coming back from a back strain, shoulder flare, or other trade-related injury. Alongside physio or medical care; massage supports the muscular layer through the return-to-work phase.

Mobile

After-hours and mobile.

Trade workdays don't usually leave a clean window for a midday clinic visit, so the practical answer is later afternoon clinic slots, Saturday mornings, or mobile sessions to your home after work. The full setup (table, linens, oils) comes with me; you just need a quiet space to lie down at the end of the day.

Common questions

Tradie massage FAQ.

I work through pain, do I actually need massage?

Working through pain is normal in trade work. The honest answer: regular maintenance isn't about whether you can keep going (most tradies can), it's about how long you can keep going. Bodies that get consistent maintenance through a long career hold up better in the back, knees, shoulders, and forearms than bodies that don't. The case for it is the next twenty years rather than the next week.

What hours are available outside work hours?

Clinic hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm. Later afternoon slots (5pm or 5.30pm) suit many tradies finishing on site; Saturday morning slots are popular. Mobile sessions can also work after-hours by arrangement when the diary allows; ask when booking.

Will it help my specific trade pattern?

For the soft-tissue and muscular layer that builds up from repetitive trade work, yes, usually substantially. The patterns are predictable: lower back from lifting, shoulders from overhead and carrying, knees from kneeling and squatting, forearms from grip and tool use. Massage handles the muscular contribution well. Massage for plumbers, sparkies, chippies, painters, and the rest all follow the same principle. For acute injuries, GP or physio leads first.
