Why tailored

Why older people need a tailored approach.

Bodies change with age, and so does what serves them in a massage session. Gentler pressure, flexible positioning, slower pace, awareness of medications and existing conditions: all matter more for older patients than for someone in their thirties. Massage for over 60 patients and across the senior years lands well when the delivery matches the body in front of it.

At the same time, "senior" covers a wide range. A sixty-year-old still running marathons and an eighty-five-year-old managing multiple conditions both belong here, and the right session for each looks different. The first session establishes what's appropriate: current health, focus areas, what you've responded well or badly to in the past.

Common patterns

Common patterns across the senior years.

Four clusters that cover most of what older patients bring through the door. The pattern shifts with the individual; the themes are predictable.

Arthritic joints and stiffness

Knees, hips, hands, neck. Gentle massage seniors find supportive works on the muscular layer around affected joints rather than the joints themselves; the soft tissue that tightens up alongside arthritis responds well to careful work.

Postural changes

Upper-back rounding, head forward, shoulders carried high. The cumulative postural pattern of many years compounded by age-related changes. Massage settles the muscle component that resists the pattern day to day.

Lower back and hip stiffness

Reduced activity, more sitting, slower morning starts. The combination produces predictable lower-back and hip tightness. Gentle work supports the muscular layer alongside daily movement.

Sleep and relaxation

Settling the nervous system, restful sleep, calmer days. For many older patients the relaxation component matters as much as the targeted muscle work. Kahuna bodywork particularly suits this restoration role.

Approach

How I tailor the session.

A first session for older patients starts with a careful conversation: current health, medications, recent surgeries, what's flared, where you'd like the work to focus. From there, the hands-on work shapes around what the body can take that day. Pressure stays gentle and adjustable throughout; positioning is flexible (side-lying with pillow support suits many clients who can't lie face-down); pace allows for breaks and adjustments. Communication during the session matters; nothing pushes past what feels right.

I'm Lorena, with Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015), ANTA registration, and Mette's Institute Kahuna L1-3 training. For older patients the gentler remedial work handles the muscular layer around specific complaints; Kahuna bodywork suits the broader restoration aim. Massage for older people and massage for elderly clients often alternates between the two through the year.

Safety considerations

What to mention at booking

  • Blood thinners (warfarin, apixaban, similar): gentler pressure to avoid bruising
  • Osteoporosis: no forceful joint mobilisation; gentle work around the affected areas
  • Recent surgery (hip, knee, back, abdominal): GP or surgeon clearance before booking
  • Heart conditions, severe respiratory issues: pace and positioning adjusted; some prefer to discuss with their cardiologist first
  • Recent falls, balance issues, or DVT history: relevant to share so the work suits

Bring your medication list to the first session if you're not sure what's relevant. Nothing replaces medical advice from your GP, and any decision sits with you.

Frequency

When to book.

The right rhythm shifts with the individual. Three common patterns; choose what fits.

Active flare

Short course

Fortnightly for 4 to 6 weeks

For a specific flare: stiff shoulder, persistent neck tightness, lower-back complaint. Closer-spaced sessions settle the muscular layer; spacing widens as the pattern eases.

Ongoing

Monthly maintenance

Every 4 to 6 weeks

The standard rhythm for ongoing maintenance. Enough to hold the baseline through cumulative load; comfortable spacing for most retirees and older patients.

Comfort

Restoration

Whenever it suits

For relaxation and quality-of-life sessions rather than treating a specific pattern. Booked when it suits, with no strict rhythm. Kahuna bodywork particularly suits this role.

Mobile

Home, village, or care facility.

For many older patients, getting to a clinic is the obstacle. Mobile sessions to your home, retirement village, independent living unit, or aged care facility across the Sunshine Coast remove the travel piece entirely. The full setup comes with me; you need a private space with room for the table and somewhere quiet for the session to land.

Clinic at Valdora also available when mobile doesn't suit. For aged care or facility bookings, staff coordination usually works smoothly. Full details on mobile massage.

Pricing

Session pricing.

Senior sessions usually run 60 minutes for targeted gentle remedial; 75 to 90 for Kahuna restoration. Claimable through most extras cover as remedial.

90-min Kahuna Clinic / Mobile $165 / $180+

Common questions

Senior massage FAQ.

I have arthritis and take medications, is massage safe?

For most patients with stable medical management, yes, gentle massage is safe and useful. Massage for elderly patients with osteoarthritis focuses on the muscular layer around affected joints; the soft-tissue tension that builds up responds well. Cautions: blood thinners mean gentler pressure, osteoporosis means no forceful joint mobilisation, recent surgery needs GP clearance. Bring your medication list to the first session.

How is this different from regular massage?

Three differences. Pressure is gentler, calibrated to skin and tissue tolerance. Positioning is flexible: side-lying with pillow support for clients who can't lie face-down, supine with bolsters for clients who can't lie flat. Pace allows for breaks. The core remedial principles still apply; the delivery shifts to match the body.

Can you come to a retirement village or care facility?

Yes, mobile sessions to retirement villages, independent living facilities, and aged care homes are part of the regular service across the Sunshine Coast. The setup needs a private room with space for the massage table and somewhere quiet enough for a session to land. Facility staff coordination usually works smoothly; discuss the specific setup when booking.
