Health fund rebates for remedial massage.
As an ANTA-registered massage therapist on the Sunshine Coast, my remedial sessions are claimable through every major Australian private health fund with extras cover. You'll pay the gap, not the full price — most clients claim $40–$80 back on every $120 session.
Yes — your remedial massage may be rebatable.
The remedial massage health fund rebate is one of the most under-used benefits in private health insurance. If you have extras cover with any major Australian fund, there's a strong chance you can claim every remedial session I deliver.
If you've been paying full price for private health remedial massage and wondering whether you can claim it back — the short answer is yes, almost certainly, for remedial sessions specifically. Eligibility depends on three things: that I'm accredited (I am, with ANTA), that your fund covers remedial massage under extras (most do), and that you have remaining limit on your annual extras cap.
What I'm registered with.
ANTA — the Australian Natural Therapists Association — is the body that registers my remedial massage practice and connects my receipts to your health fund.
ANTA Accredited Member.
I'm a fully ANTA registered massage therapist, with a Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015) through Demi International. ANTA is one of Australia's longest-standing peak bodies for natural therapists, requiring members to meet ongoing CPD, insurance, and ethical practice standards.
Because I'm ANTA-accredited, my provider number is recognised by all major Australian private health funds — Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, AHM, HBF, Australian Unity, Defence Health, Police Health, Frank, Westfund, Australian Health Service Alliance, Doctors' Health Fund and many more.

Don't see your fund? If it covers ANTA-registered remedial massage, you can almost certainly claim — just ask them or me to confirm.
How much can I claim back?
The honest answer: it depends on your level of cover. Rebates typically land between $40 and $80 per 60-minute remedial session. Top-tier extras give higher rebates; basic extras give lower. Your annual extras limit also matters.
How HICAPS works at the time of payment.
HICAPS is the on-the-spot rebate system you've used at the dentist or physio — swipe your fund card, the rebate is deducted immediately, you only pay the gap.
HICAPS makes the HICAPS remedial massage rebate transaction feel seamless: you walk in, get treated, and at the till the rebate is processed instantly through your fund's electronic claim system. The downside is the merchant terminal and per-transaction fees — small studios sometimes choose not to offer it.
I don't currently offer HICAPS at the studio. Instead, you pay the full session price on the day, and I provide a receipt with my full ANTA provider details. You then submit that receipt through your fund's app — Bupa, Medibank, HCF and most others have one — and the rebate lands in your linked bank account, usually within 1–3 business days.
Pay full · Claim back via app
Functionally identical to HICAPS — you end up paying the same out-of-pocket, just claimed afterwards. Most clients find it feels easier once they've done it once: no fumbling for cards, no terminal issues, just one tap in the app on the way home.
Can I claim Kahuna massage?
The short answer: no, not directly. Kahuna bodywork falls outside the ANTA-recognised scope, so it isn't claimable as remedial massage through health fund extras.
The full picture.
Australian health funds rebate remedial massage specifically — defined techniques delivered by accredited professionals. Kahuna bodywork is a traditional Hawaiian modality that uses different techniques, and most funds don't recognise it as a claimable service. Same goes for mobile-only sessions where remedial techniques aren't being used.
If health fund rebate is essential to your budget, book a remedial session — you'll get the therapeutic benefits and the rebate. If you genuinely want a Kahuna session and aren't worried about the rebate, book Kahuna. Sometimes I'll blend techniques during a remedial session if that's what your body needs — the session is still claimable because the primary modality is remedial.
What you need from me.
Every receipt I issue for a remedial session includes the full set of details your health fund requires. You shouldn't have to ask for anything — it's all there by default.
Rebate FAQ.
Do all health funds cover remedial massage equally?
No — coverage varies significantly between funds and even between policy levels within the same fund. Top-tier extras policies with Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB and others typically rebate $60–$80 per session. Mid-tier and basic extras might rebate $30–$50. Some funds limit the number of sessions claimable per year. The simplest way to check is to call your fund and ask the per-session rebate for remedial massage, and your annual extras limit remaining.
Will I need a referral from my GP?
Not for private health fund rebates — you can book directly, no GP referral needed. A referral is only required if you're claiming under Medicare's Chronic Disease Management plan (formerly EPC), which covers up to 5 allied health sessions per year for eligible conditions. For standard private health extras claims, just turn up, pay, claim through your fund's app afterwards.
Can I claim through my Medicare?
Remedial massage isn't directly Medicare-claimable, but it can be partially funded through a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan if you have a chronic condition diagnosed by your GP. Under CDM, you get a Medicare rebate of around $58 per allied health session, up to 5 sessions per calendar year. Ask your GP whether you qualify. For everyone else, private health extras cover is the rebate path.
Time to use the cover you're paying for.
If you have extras and you've been carrying tightness, pain, or just stress — book a remedial session and let your fund take care of most of it.
