Why tailored

Why pregnancy needs a tailored approach.

A pregnant body changes more dramatically than any other adult state. Weight shifts, postural changes, hormonal effects on ligament laxity, the growing belly altering centre of gravity, sleep disruption, increasing demand on the lower back and hips: standard massage protocols don't fit. Pregnancy massage adapts positioning, pressure, technique, and pace to suit the actual body rather than running a generic remedial routine.

On the Sunshine Coast, prenatal massage is well-supported as part of normal pregnancy care, with most maternity providers comfortable referring patients to qualified massage therapists. For the wider service context, the pregnancy massage page covers the modality overview; for specific discomfort patterns like lower-back ache, sciatica during pregnancy, or rib pain, the pregnancy discomfort page covers the clinical detail.

Common patterns

Common pregnancy body issues.

Four clusters that cover most of what pregnant patients bring through the door. The dominant pattern shifts through trimesters.

Lower back and hips

The dominant pattern from mid-pregnancy onward. Weight, postural adjustment, and ligament changes load the lumbar erectors, quadratus lumborum, glutes, and hip flexors. Massage settles the muscular layer that holds the changing centre of gravity.

Upper back, neck, and shoulders

The shoulders pull forward as the chest changes; upper back and neck carry compensation. Common across all trimesters, especially second and third. Side-lying positioning gives good access without compromising comfort.

Legs, ankles, and circulation

Fluid retention, swelling, leg fatigue in the later trimesters. Gentle leg work can support circulation and ease the weight-bearing fatigue; nothing aggressive given the increased clotting risk in pregnancy.

Sleep and nervous system

Hormonal changes, anxiety about the upcoming birth, broken sleep from late-pregnancy discomfort. Settling the nervous system matters as much as the muscular work; Kahuna bodywork particularly suits this restoration role.

Approach

How I tailor the session.

A pregnancy session starts with the picture: how many weeks, first or subsequent pregnancy, any complications, what's flared, what your maternity team has advised. From there, positioning sets up: side-lying with pillow support from the second trimester, modified prone with bolsters early on if comfortable, supine with bolsters under the right hip to avoid vena cava pressure. Pressure stays appropriately moderate throughout.

I'm Lorena, with Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015), ANTA registration, and Mette's Institute Kahuna L1-3 training. Pregnant patients usually do well with a mix: targeted remedial work for specific lower-back or hip patterns, and Kahuna bodywork for broader restoration across the trimesters. The combination tends to suit the changing demands of pregnancy better than either alone.

Mention at booking

When to check with your maternity team

  • First trimester, particularly before 12 weeks: discuss with GP or midwife before booking
  • Any pregnancy complication (preeclampsia, placenta previa, gestational diabetes, threatened miscarriage history): clearance from obstetrician first
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets): clearance recommended
  • High blood pressure or signs of preeclampsia: requires medical clearance before any massage
  • Anything that feels off on the day of the session: postpone and check with your maternity team

For uncomplicated pregnancies past the first trimester, prenatal massage Sunshine Coast practitioners commonly support patients without specific clearance. When in doubt, your maternity team confirms.

Across pregnancy

When to book.

The right rhythm shifts across trimesters. Three patterns that suit most pregnancies.

First trimester

Gentle start

As needed

Shorter, gentler sessions with maternity team clearance. Often skipped or done lightly in the first 12 weeks. Focus is settling, not deep work.

Second trimester

Established rhythm

Monthly to fortnightly

The most comfortable window for regular sessions. The body is settled into pregnancy; postural patterns are building but manageable. Side-lying positioning suits well now.

Third trimester

Regular support

Fortnightly

Closer-spaced sessions through the final months. The body is carrying its peak load; regular support holds the lower back, hips, and neck through the final weeks.

Mobile

Mobile to your home.

As pregnancy progresses, getting to a clinic can become the harder piece. Mobile sessions to your home across the Sunshine Coast often work better in the second and third trimesters: no driving fatigue on top of pregnancy fatigue, no parking, no walking from car to clinic with a thirty-week belly. The full setup comes with me; you need a quiet space with room for the table.

Clinic at Valdora also available. Full details on mobile massage. After birth, the new mums page covers the postnatal window.

Pricing

90-min Kahuna Clinic / Mobile $165 / $180+

Common questions

Pregnancy massage FAQ.

Is massage safe during pregnancy?

Yes, with appropriate positioning and pressure, safe massage during pregnancy is well-established. Second and third trimesters are the most comfortable windows; first trimester is approached cautiously, with many therapists waiting until after 12 weeks and with GP or midwife clearance for high-risk pregnancies. Side-lying with pillow support replaces face-down from the second trimester. For complications, your obstetrician or midwife is the right contact for clearance.

When in pregnancy is massage most helpful?

Second and third trimesters tend to deliver the most value. By mid-pregnancy the body is carrying noticeable weight and the postural changes; massage addresses the lower back, hips, shoulders, and neck patterns. Third trimester especially benefits from regular sessions as the body manages the final weeks. First-trimester sessions are shorter and gentler, focused on settling rather than deep work.

Can you come to my home for the appointment?

Yes, mobile sessions to your home across the Sunshine Coast are part of the regular service. For pregnant women in the third trimester especially, mobile is often more practical than driving and parking on top of pregnancy fatigue. The full setup comes with me. Many expecting mothers find a home setting more relaxing for the session itself.
